DAY 16: GOING GREEN FOR KIDS
Here are a few websites that are fantastic resources for those little treehuggers:
EPA's Environmental Kids Club
Kids Are Green
Nickelodeon's Big Green Help
Kids Planet
These sites are fun, but teach children at the same time. Ariana has tried them all and enjoys them.

DAY 18: LET IT ALL HANG OUT
The biggest thing we have done to go green in our house is air drying our laundry. For the last year and a half, I have only used our dryer a handful of times. I have an antique drying rack that hangs on the wall in our bathroom and in the warmer months I hang outside. It has saved huge amounts on our energy bills and lots of carbon dioxide. Just consider:
• If all Americans line-dried for just half a year, it would save 3.3% of the country’s total residential output of carbon dioxide, experts say.
• Sunlight bleaches and disinfects naturally.
• Clothes small better without adding toxic chemicals that will be touching your body.
• It saves a ton of cash: My electric bill has dropped by at least $25-$30 per month.
• It gives yourself and your family an added reason to step outside and get fresh air.
Ebay Drying Racks: They have some great antiques racks like the one I use in bathroom from the 1800's.
Retractable Clotheslines
Project Laundry: A website based in Concord, NH that advocates making air-drying laundry acceptable and desirable as a simple and effective way to save energy.
DAY 19: RAIN BARRELS
This is a simple tip. Save a ton of water with a rain barrel. Use what you capture to water your plants, your gardens, grass... anything. It is a very simple tip, but residential irrigation can account for up to 40% of water consumption.
DAY 20: EARTH
Do something fun for Earth Day and give back at the same time. Take your kids to see Disneynature's new film, Earth. For every ticket sold opening week to Earth, Disney will plant a tree in the Brazilian forest.
The film tell the remarkable story of 3 animal families and the amazing journey across the planet. The trailer looks phenominal and I can't wait to see it. As an added bonus... the narrator is James Earl Jones. Seriously, how could you go wrong listening to that wonderful voice?
DAY 21: Get YOUR GARDEN READY FOR SPRING
DAY 22: WASH YOUR MELONS
Don't waste resources and but one of those silly vegetable washing products. Just go to the old standby... white vinegar. Add 3 parts water to one part vinegar, spray of the fruit of veggie and wash away pesticides and grime. Just rinse and eat! Easy.
Also, head on over to Home Depot tomorrow to get a free CFL bulb in honor of Earth Day.
Thanks for taking the challenge! Your book will be in the mail this week!
ReplyDeleteI like your Disney tip. I also read that the new line of Earth clothes was interweaved with bits of recycled plastic. How cool/crazy is that?
